I spent years after leaving the Army not knowing what I had
earned. Not because the benefits didn’t exist — they did.
I just didn’t know to look.
If you’re a veteran and you haven’t done a full audit of
your benefits recently, this is your sign to do it. Here
are five that most veterans either don’t know about or keep
putting off.
- VA Disability Compensation
If you have a service-connected condition, physical or
mental, you may qualify for monthly tax-free compensation.
A lot of veterans are either unrated or underrated. Getting
a proper rating can change your financial picture
significantly. - VA Home Loan Benefit
No down payment. No private mortgage insurance. This benefit
can be used more than once. A lot of veterans use it once
and don’t realize it resets. - VA Healthcare
Free or low-cost healthcare based on your service and
income. Many veterans assume they don’t qualify or that
it’s too complicated to enroll. It’s not. - HISA Grant
The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations grant
provides up to $6,800 for home modifications related to
your service-connected disability. Most veterans have never
heard of it. - Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)
If your disability affects your ability to work, VR&E can
fund education, training, or even self-employment. This one
is seriously underused.
This is just the surface. These are benefits you earned
through your service and sacrifice. You deserve to know
what’s available to you. If you want the full breakdown in
